Produced by Business and Cultural Development Centre – KEPA, this episode of the GREENSMES project podcast explores how circular economy practices, sustainable resource management, and innovative business approaches, can support the green transition of key sectors such as construction and food production.
Guest speakers share valuable insights on how businesses and industries can adopt more sustainable practices, reduce waste, and create new opportunities through circular economy solutions;
Ilias Dimitriadis, expert in waste management, discusses the importance of recycling excavation, construction, and demolition waste in Greece. He explains the role of ANAKEM as the nationwide system that organizes and supports the recycling of construction debris, highlighting the progress achieved in recent years, including recycling rates reaching around 50% and more than 5 million tons of materials recycled in 2024. He also reflects on the main challenge ahead: integrating recycled secondary materials into public works and moving from a linear to a circular construction economy.
Leonidas Mademlis, food scientist and consultant to food industries with more than 27 years of professional experience, shares practical insights on upcycling dough by-products in the food industry. He explains how better management of production rework can reduce waste, improve environmental performance, and create new products with commercial value. Through real business examples, he highlights how simple managerial changes and a circular mindset can help food SMEs transform production by-products into valuable resources.
